Problems With Purebred Dogs

Saturday, November 1, 2014
posted by Jim Murphy

PUREBREDOne of the main problems with purebred dogs is that in order to create a pure bred puppy, you need two dogs from the exact same gene pool. The gene pool is limited so dog breeders will use genes from the same family gene pool which in inbreeding. As many of these gene pools are limited or closed, the risk of genetic defects rises significantly with each successive coupling.

These defects include a higher risk of cancers and tumors as well as eye, heart, joint and bone disorders. Diseases of the immune system and neurological system can occur. Don’t panic just be aware of the risk of defects in your purebred puppy. This is a risk that is much higher than in a mixed breed puppy.

Remember, your pets count.
